UPS → Yamato Transfer Procedure
When you shop on a European online site, your purchase will be delivered by the local postal service or an international courier service such as DHL, UPS or FedEx.
This site uses the cheapest UPS and postal service. After arriving in Japan, domestic shipping is handled as follows:
○ UPS Japan will continue to handle domestic deliveries (mainly in urban areas)
◯ Yamato Transport will take over domestic delivery
This will be fine when Yamato Transport takes over, but there are some inconveniences when UPS Japan handles it.
- Deliveries are only made on weekdays, and there are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays.
- The time you can specify for redelivery is either morning (9:00-12:00) or afternoon (14:00-17:00).
- If the recipient is not at home after the third delivery attempt, the parcel will be left at the office. If the recipient cannot be contacted, the parcel will be returned to the sender.
(In reality, it seems that they don't return items unless it's absolutely necessary.)
Either way, this is quite inconvenient for people who work during the week or who live alone.
There is a way to avoid this. Transfer to Yamato Transport. (Free)
procedure
1. Access UPS customer support.
There is a phone number of 0120-27-1040 and an email. The phone call is easy if you can get through. However, depending on the timing, the wait time can be long, and many people would like to get it done when it is convenient for them, so below are the steps for email.
2. Sign up for UPS My Choice.
3. Once you log in, you will be taken to the email sending screen.
4. The items to select are cargo tracking, cargo delivery, and consignee.
5. Next, fill in the tracking number, shipping address (Austria, 1070), and new delivery address (Japan, zip code). Thinking about it, the Japanese is a bit strange, but it seems that it was a translation of the original English page, and the support person did not respond to this question.
6. In the "Inquiries/Comments" section, please write "Please change the delivery company to Yamato Transport."
It's done.
It seems most efficient to do this before your luggage arrives in Japan.
